Rodent Control in Mission and Merriam, Kansas
Mission and Merriam are older houses packed close to busy retail. Both sit just north of Overland Park along I-35 and Shawnee Mission Parkway, and both filled in early, so most homes are small ranches, Cape Cods and split-levels from the middle of the last century. Johnson Dr. runs through Mission's shopping district, and Merriam has a long retail strip along I-35.
Older houses plus restaurants, car lots and big box stores close by make for steady mouse pressure and more rats than the newer suburbs see. The Johnson Dr. shops are only a few blocks from quiet residential streets.
Turkey Creek and the I-35 Retail Strip
Turkey Creek winds through Merriam along I-35, and its banks give rats and mice cover. The restaurants and stores along Johnson Dr. and near Merriam Town Center have dumpsters and back doors, and the businesses usually run rodent service for stores and restaurants. Rats are active most of the year here, with more yard sightings in late summer and fall.
If you live near the creek, watch your shed. Rats off the creek bank usually burrow under the closest outbuilding first. Burrows along a shed floor or slab edge, or droppings the size of a raisin, mean rat removal. Our guide on creeks and backyard habits explains what draws them.
Small Lots, Close Neighbors
Homes here sit on modest lots, close to the neighbors, and mice go between yards without a second thought. Detached garages, older basements with block walls and crawl spaces under additions are the usual ways in, and that detached garage at the back of the lot is a quiet place to settle before moving into the house. Once they're inside, it's trapping house mice and sealing the old foundation and the garage.
Small fixes go a long way on close-set lots. Keep the trash cans lidded and off the side of the house, pick up fallen fruit and spilled seed, close up the old basement window gaps. It helps if the neighbors do the same. The houses here are a lot like Prairie Village's ranches and Cape Cods and the older streets of Shawnee.

Spring Cleaning in the Detached Garage
Mice move into the older houses here from October on and stay through the winter. Then in spring a lot of them move back out, and the first place they go is the detached garage at the back of the lot. If you're cleaning it out in April and find shredded paper in a box or droppings along the back wall, that's who's been living there. Clean it up wet with gloves and disinfectant, get things up off the floor, and ask about mouse-proofing a detached garage before they come back to the house next fall.

Questions We Get
I'm renting. Can I still call?
Yes. Tell your landlord too, since sealing the building is usually the owner's job and a lot of leases cover pest work.
Rats or mice, how do I tell?
Rat droppings are about the size of a raisin or bigger. Mouse droppings look like grains of rice. Burrows along a slab or shed mean rats.
