Rodent Control in Prairie Village, Kansas
Prairie Village is older houses under big trees. It borders Overland Park to the northeast. J.C. Nichols began building it in 1941, and it became a city in 1951. The streets around Corinth Square, the Prairie Village Shops and Harmon Park are lined with ranches, Cape Cods and small two-stories.
Those homes have a lot of character and a lot of birthdays. After 70-plus winters, foundations shift, old utility holes get forgotten and basements get remodeled more than once. Each change can leave a gap for a mouse. Meadowbrook Park on the south side adds a big stretch of open lawn and trees close to homes, so the streets around it tend to see more field mice in the fall than the blocks up by Corinth Square.
Where the Addition Meets the Old House
A lot of Prairie Village homes have been added onto or rebuilt. Where the new part meets the original house there's often a seam mice can work through, and the tech will look hard at those joints along with the original foundation. Down below, many basements have block walls, old window wells and a laundry area where mice come and go. Cover the window wells with sturdy grates or domes, and seal the old dryer and exhaust vent openings. One overlooked gap can keep a mouse problem going for years, which is why sealing seams, vents and old pipe holes matters more here than trapping.
Most calls are house mice in the basement and kitchen, and that starts with mouse trapping. In a finished basement the tech will usually trap in the utility room and storage spaces and seal from the outside, not open up walls.
Acorns, Big Oaks and the Detached Garage
Big oaks and maples drop acorns and seeds that feed mice and squirrels all fall, and the branches over the roof give them a path up. Trim them back from the roofline. Mice that winter in the attic leave a mess, and attic cleanup may follow.
Lots are modest and the houses sit fairly close together. Many have a one-car garage or a detached garage at the back with little or no seal at the bottom of the door, which makes it an easy first stop. In spring, mice that wintered in the walls move out there too. Ask about mice in detached garages when you call, and tell us how old the house is and whether it has an addition. The streets along the east edge share the same housing as north Leawood, and north Overland Park and Mission aren't much different.

Questions We Get
Could the noise in my attic be squirrels?
It could. Squirrels are busy in the daytime and live in those big trees. Mice are more active at night. This line handles mice, rats and voles, so tell us what you hear and when.
Does the detached garage need sealing too?
If mice are using it, yes. A lot of the detached garages behind older Prairie Village homes have no seal at the base of the door at all.
