Rodent Control in Shawnee, Kansas
Shawnee is hills and woods. It sits northwest of Overland Park. The older part of town around Nieman Road and Johnson Dr. has mid-century homes, and the newer subdivisions climb the hills to the west, a lot of them on wooded lots near Mill Creek and Clear Creek.
It's hillier and more wooded than most of Johnson County, which means more wildlife edges, more mice in the fall and more voles in the yards. Woods give mice food and cover all year, and when it gets cold, the closest warm building is your garage or basement.
Walkouts and Decks on the West Side Hills
A lot of west Shawnee homes have walkout basements on sloped lots. The exposed lower wall has doors, windows and utility lines right at ground level, and mice use the gaps around them. A deck built over the walkout gives them a dry, shaded spot right against the house. The tech will check the walkout side closely, plus the garage and the deck. Ask about sealing walkouts, decks and garages.
Before fall, rake leaves away from the foundation, move the firewood off the ground and away from the walkout wall, and check the gaps under the deck stairs. That's where a lot of Shawnee activity gets found. Once they're in, it's mice in the walkout and kitchen, and mice in a finished basement shows where they hide.
Edges of Shawnee Mission Park and Mill Creek
Shawnee Mission Park is one of the biggest parks in the county, with a big lake and a lot of woods. Homes along its edges and along the Mill Creek Streamway get steady pressure from field mice, and some see the occasional rat near sheds, compost and creek banks. Big droppings or burrows by a shed may mean rats along the creek. Sheds near the tree line are a common base, which is where shed and garage work helps. In spring, voles show up in lawns near the trees, especially where there's heavy ground cover or mulch, and vole control is a regular call.

Older Streets Off Nieman Road
Near Old Shawnee Town and the older downtown, the houses are mostly ranches and split-levels with block or poured foundations, closer together, so mice go yard to yard easily. Calls from here are mostly the usual suspects: mice in the basement by November, a detached garage with no door seal, a dryer vent flap that's been stuck open for years. Johnson Dr. through old downtown Shawnee puts restaurants and shops close to houses, so a rat now and then isn't unheard of. It's a lot like Mission and Merriam to the east. Neighbors in Lenexa to the south deal with the same parks and streamways.

Questions We Get
Not sure if it's mice, voles or something bigger. Should I still call?
Yes. Tell us what you're seeing and hearing, and the tech can confirm it on the visit.
Does a deck over the walkout really attract mice?
It can. The space under a deck is dry and shaded, right against the house. Keep it clear of stored stuff and have the walkout wall checked.
